Every person’s health story is different. The information below explains common causes and contributing factors for this issue, but it is not a one‑size‑fits‑all prescription.

As a qualified naturopath practising in Adelaide’s CBD, I take the time to understand your unique circumstances, use targeted testing when needed, and design a personalised care plan so you can feel and function at your best.

Hypertension

A rise in blood pressure is a warning signal reflecting a change in your health status. It indicates that your blood vessels are affected by inflammation and/or insulin resistance.

By choosing a new lifestyle and dietary measures, you may help your body reverse major risks to long-term health. Untreated high blood pressure can lead to stroke and heart disease.

Treatment options may include the need for medication. Keep in mind that exclusive use of medication has significant limitations in failing to address the underlying problems and in the range of side effects that come with the medications.

In other words, getting the BP numbers right on measurement doesn’t mean you have eliminated your overall health risks.

Lifestyle Changes to Reduce Blood Pressure

Exercise regularly- aim for at least 30 minutes 5 times per week.

Restore your optimal weight, as obesity increases the risk of hypertension by 50%.

Stress management – explore options to find a form of relaxation that works for you. Stress produces cortisol, which has well-known links to increased blood pressure. I recommend individualized herbal medicine to help restore balance when under stress. I suggest saliva stress hormone screening to assess your stress impact and assist with targeted treatment.

Salt reduction- is useful for some with raised blood pressure.

Diet- increased dietary protein has been associated with lower blood pressure.

Screen for Insulin Resistance- use a ketogenic diet (low carb) until metabolism is restored.

Screen for inflammatory indicators- C-Reactive protein, homocysteine, and MTHFR gene mutations.

There are a range of supplements that may be considered along with lifestyle changes.
