Every person’s health story is different. The information below explains common causes and contributing factors for this issue, but it is not a one‑size‑fits‑all prescription.

As a qualified naturopath practising in Adelaide’s CBD, I take the time to understand your unique circumstances, use targeted testing when needed, and design a personalised care plan so you can feel and function at your best.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

This condition is also called autointoxication because it involves intestinal tract inflammation, resulting in partly digested food or bacteria crossing the membrane to gain entrance to the general circulation. The result may be an inflammatory cascade and a toxic response in other organs.

A leaky gut leads to a leaky brain barrier. This may result in memory impairment and brain inflammation. Brain fog is a common symptom.

Other symptoms may include irritable bowel, energy loss, mood changes, arthritis, sinusitis, and bloating. If untreated, this condition has links with autoimmunity, allergies, depression, eczema, migraines, hives, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

The inflammation may be triggered by dietary sensitivities, processed foods in the diet, excess alcohol, stress, reduced good gut flora, lack of fibre in the diet, candida, detrimental bacteria, antibiotic medication, environmental toxins, or even excessive exercise.

I recommend avoidance of quinoa as it is very irritating to a sensitive gut. Chilli may also cause further irritation as it is so heating.

Healing of the intestinal wall is a multi-step process. If your symptoms are severe, the starting point will be to reduce inflammation and reactivity. Take digestive enzymes and nutrients to reduce gut inflammation.

Once you are less reactive, the process of treating detrimental gut bugs and/or specific food intolerances will be more effective.
